Interview prt.3 I love it thats why I"m posting it

Interviewer: Um, you guys still get the chance to catch Rancid in the Bay Area every now and then? I mean, excluding the tour you did with them a couple years ago.Jade: Um, Rancid hasn’t played in the Bay Area for, the last time I can remember them playing in the Bay Area was Warped Tour I guess. They’ve been working on a new record right now and, every time we go to L.A., we go to L.A. a lot, Tim and Lars and all of us hang out, and Rob from the Transplants, and we hang out with them a lot. We don’t get to see them very much live but uh, we get to, you know, hang out all the time, so that’s great.Interviewer: Okay, seeing as this band, has had ten years in the making to where it is today, do you have any advice for high school, college kids who think they have something good, or any advice for what they should do to hopefully become what you are today?Jade: I’d say just, play any show, don’t, I think a lot of bands today don’t want to pay their dues, they want to go right from being a new band to being on MTV, and being a huge band, it’s like, it builds character to be out there, and do years of touring, darn it, shoot, I mean shit, (laughs). It’s, you need to experience the hardship, like this band has experienced a lot of hardship and paid a lot of dues, it’s made us appreciate where we’re at a lot more, so just, you know, take it slow. Practice. Don’t write crappy songs. Write good songs. Don’t be a crappy band. Don’t catch SARS like all of us.Interviewer: Um, okay so what can fans expect from AFI within the next year, can you guys see yourselves going back into the studio, or are you gonna, after this US tour ends, are you going to go abroad to tour for the album, what do you have in store for the next year?Jade: Um, after this we do east coast, and then we go to Europe, and then we do Warped Tour and then we go to Canada, and then we go do festivals in Japan, back to Europe, and then another headlining tour in the fall. And after that I don’t know. And we’re gonna be on Conan. And maybe Saturday Night Live. But I probably just jinxed the Saturday Night Live thing, because we’re waiting to hear back from them. So we’ll probably get a call in about five minutes saying, no, you’re not doing it. So we’re not going to be on Saturday Night Live. (laughs)Interviewer: Yet. Eventually, I’m sure probably. Okay well I’m sure a lot of people ask you about the name of the band, you know, changing it from A Fire Inside, shortening it to AFI, can you give us any inside information about the band name?Jade: It was actually AFI first, um, when the band was started, I wasn’t in the band at the time, but we all grew up in the same town and hung out, and back then, we grew up listening to punk in the 80s and there were a lot of acronym bands. You know, like DRI and RKL and AOD and bands like this, so it was kind of like, that was like the thing, so being fifteen-year-old kids, of course they were like, oh, we’re gonna have an acronym band. And then eventually it became A Fire Inside, after several years.Interviewer: Speaking of the olden days, what did you do before you joined AFI, in those five years you were in high school together and before you joined the band? Jade: I went to school. I was at Berkely, and I graduated, and soon after I graduated they asked me to join the band. It worked out pretty well, I didn’t have to actually exist in the real world at all, I went right from college to being in a band so, it was pretty nice.Interviewer: What’s your degree in?Jade: Social theory. Completely useless. So it’s a very good thing I’m in a band right now.Interviewer: Um what about side projects, do any of you have anything going on like producing or playing in other bands?Jade: I’d actually like to produce, I never really thought about it. But um, I have executive producer credit on our new album, so that would be cool. I’d probably ruin somebody’s record but um, I make, I spend all my spare time making electronic music, and I’m really into it, and I have a lot of material, so if I was to do something I’d probably put out an electonic album. So we’ll see what happens.Interviewer: You do that, you’d better work it to college radio, it’ll do well, I’m sure. And also, you’d have to come up with a kickass DJ name.Jade: I had one! What was it? I had a good one, I don’t know why, we were just talking about it, but I can’t remember. I’ll be DJ SARS. I’ll probably be dead of SARS by then, so I guess it doesn’t matter. Posthumous album.Interviewer: Tupac put out like six albums after he died, so you could have a good career out of that. (laughs). So um, how about some closing comments, words of advice, words of wisdom, anything.Jade: Oh words of wisdom, I have no wisdom to impart. You guys are in college anyway, you’re probably smarter than me so, go about your business. Go to hell!Interviewer: Um, thank you very much for doing the show with us, we really appreciate it, and we hope you have a good show tonight.
